The Birth of an Industry: 1889 and the First Managed Service Revolution
The year was 1889. While Thailand was still known as Siam under King Chulalongkorn’s progressive reign (as Alsco Uniforms ® in Thailand opened only later in 2007), across the Pacific in Lincoln, Nebraska, a young entrepreneur named George Steiner was about to change the service industry forever. Steiner didn’t just start a business. He invented an entire industry: the rental and laundering of linens and uniforms.
What began with a simple observation, that businesses needed clean linens but lacked the time, space, and expertise to maintain them properly, evolved into the global phenomenon we know today as Alsco Uniforms. Steiner’s recurring towel rental service changed everything, launching a global revolution in textile care and workplace presentation.
