How To Deal With Workplace Fatigue



Not many people pay attention to workplace fatigue in the business world. And this isn’t just about the business fields that require physical work – it is just as present in the fields that include a lot of sitting and working with the computers.

Besides obviously being harmful to the personal lives of the workers, workplace fatigue can affect their productivity at work and their morale, which can negatively affect the company in more ways than one.

It is extremely important for companies to find ways for fighting workplace fatigue. This state is not just about feeling tired, as most people would assume. It implies mental, emotional, and physical exhaustion that needs to be taken seriously.

With all that in mind, here are a couple of strategies that can be used to fight workplace fatigue. Using some of them at your own workplace can improve the productivity of your employees, even if the issue is still not as present.

How To Solve The Problem Quickly

The fastest way to get rid of workplace fatigue is to let your employees go home, but that’s not really an option if you want your business to last. After all, employees need to earn their salary, and you need them to do their job. So there has to be another solution.

Fortunately, there are many ways to combat this problem, and not all of them require much effort.

In fact, let’s forget the word “combat” because it sounds like something negative that requires a lot of work. Let’s call them the lazy ways of fighting workplace fatigue. It means that you can do it at your own pace and it would still lead to positive results.

Here are a few options you should consider:

1. More Exercising

Exercising has been proven to help people fight many physical and psychological problems, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that it is on this list as one of the best options for fighting workplace fatigue.

Although it might sound odd that somebody would try to fight tiredness in this way, it’s important to keep in mind that the reason for workplace fatigue is rarely physical exertion.

What’s good about this kind of physical exercise is that it doesn’t have to take much time. Actually, even 15-min workout sessions can help the employees feel better.

Of course, it goes without saying that nobody should be forced to exercise and everybody who takes part in this kind of activity should do so because they themselves want it. However, there are a couple of things that could inspire and motivate workers to work out.

For example, the people at Autodesk’s Pier 9 facility, located in San Francisco came up with one of the most creative ideas ever. They built a work desk that allows an employee to work and walk, or even run, at the same time. Some might think it resembles a hamster wheel, which might be offensive to some people, but it does its purpose – it lets an employee exercise while working.

If you think that people in your workplace wouldn’t exactly be thrilled about using a giant hamster wheel, there are other equally creative options that you can consider. For instance, you can move the washroom to a different nearby building or disable the elevator. Or perhaps not.

2. Take A Break So You Can Work More

When you get tired, the first thing you think of is taking a break. So, a workplace should be built in a way that allows the employees to relax and really rest during the breaks. There should also be some kind of pantry so they can get a snack and drinks while relaxing.

Moreover, if there are employees who work overnight, there should also be areas for taking a short nap if they start feeling too drowsy to work.

Regular and proper breaks can do a lot to prevent fatigue in the workplace. The office should not be a labour camp and every hard-working employee deserves a comfortable place to rest.

3. Sitting Can Be Exhausting

Employees who are required to sit all day long may suffer from fatigue due to improper posture. Bad posture can also lead to back pains and other health problems. Luckily, all of these problems can easily be prevented if the workplace is set up properly.

For example, office chairs should be ergonomically designed to help employees maintain proper posture. Employees should also be encouraged to do exercises that can help them improve their posture.

4. Stand Up For Yourself

Another way to prevent employees from getting tired is making provisions so they can work while standing. One way to do that is to provide them with standing desks that they can use.

Standing up does not mean that employees can’t still feel fatigued. They also need to maintain proper posture while standing and they should move around the office as much as their job allows them to.

5. Recognise And Prevent Dehydration

Being dehydrated is one of the less noticeable reasons of feeling fatigued at work. Hectic work hours tend to make people forget that they haven’t had anything to drink that day.

Dehydration is also one of the most frequent causes of headaches.

Installing a drinking fountain in an easily accessible and obvious location can do a lot to eliminate this fatigue factor.

You can also give employees customised drinking mugs or bottles so they can still drink without going to the fountain whenever they feel thirsty. For instance, if they tend to drink plenty of water, it means that they would also need to the bathroom more often and if you took our tip about relocating the bathroom in another building altogether, you can make them exercise. You’re hitting two birds with a single stone! Of course, we’re just kidding again there.

This was a short list of the most practical solutions to the problem of work fatigue. Completely eliminating fatigue from the workplace would require addressing each of the employee’s problems directly. Applying these techniques to your business should show some results.
